Leonkoro String Quartet

In just a few years, the young Leonkoro String Quartet has established itself in the international elite among string quartets. In 2022, they swept the table across several prestigious international quartet competitions
with an intense, present interplay and an unusually mature understanding of sound. Their concerts are well-thought-out and often with narratively coherent programs. Tonight's program is titled 'Lamentations' with works that reflect on loss and memories with an inner tension.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Joseph Haydn is often referred to as the father of the string quartet, who with his almost 70 quartets developed the form of quartet composition that generations after him built on.

The 6 quartets opus 76 were the last complete set of quartets Haydn completed. These 6 quartets are a mature peak in his production and have been described as “character quartets”.

Quartet No. 5 is sometimes referred to as the “Largo” quartet, which is due to the beautiful, slow 2nd movement, which in older sources is described as being used at funerals. About halfway through the movement, the harmonica turns in a dark and for its time unusually advanced harmonic direction, briefly turning the movement towards the somber.

Mendelssohn's six string quartets constitute one of the most important quartet cycles of the Romantic period, ranging from the Beethoven-inspired youth work Quartet No. 1 to the heartfelt Quartet No. 6, written in deep grief over the sudden death of his beloved sister Fanny. The quartet was the last major work Mendelssohn completed, and he died two months after finishing the quartet, which is dedicated to Fanny.

Benjamin Britten's String Quartet No. 2 was written in 1945 and premiered at a concert marking the 250th anniversary of Henry Purcell's death. Britten donated most of his fees to famine relief in India.
